About Bethlehem Lutheran Church

We believe in a loving God who makes himself known in the Bible. He shows his love for us through his Son, Jesus Christ.

We want God to be at the centre of whatever we do, both as individuals and as a community. Because of this we share our lives, supporting and encouraging each other in both our joys and sorrows.

Our church is a community of people of diverse backgrounds and different ages, with family roots in many parts of the world — Latvia, Czechoslovakia, Germany, the Netherlands, England, Estonia, France, Cambodia, Greece and, of course, Australia.

Some of our members live in the city itself, while others come from outlying suburbs.

Our congregation was formed in October 1860 by about 25 families. The first Bethlehem Church building was a small church in Waymouth Street. The present Flinders Street building was erected in 1871-72.

Today members of our community at Bethlehem share a common faith which is as relevant today as when our congregation was formed in 1860.
